Hi,

I plan to order a soft case for my Nikon N80. The model I am looking
at is called Nikon case CF-59. I plan to use my Nikkor 24-85mm
f/3.5-4.5 AFS with it and I think the size of the lens should NOT be
an issue. However, I am not sure if it will fit N80 + MB-16 battery
grip. Can someone with hand on experience kindly share the
information? Additionally, how useful it is in the field to have a
soft case in general?

Really appreciate it.

Yong

The generic name for them used to be "eveready cases." Pros tended to call
them "neveready cases." Try to remember if you've ever seen a pro use a
camera case.

You have to ask yourself whether the added protection is worth the bother.

Hi Yong,

I don't think the CF-59 case is designed for use with the battery grip. I
just looked at Nikon UK site and it only mentions F80 with basic 28-80 lens.

I am not even sure it would take your lens as I cannot recall the width of
it.

I would however recommend you look at LowePro Zoom holster cases as I like
their designs, they provide good protection and some pockets for
film/filters. There are various sizes so I suggest you look up their website
or pop along to your local photo store with your camera gear and try them
out. It will probably be cheaper than the nikon case as well

Cheers,

Of course who among us are pros? For an amateur, 99% of the time the camera
will not be in the owners hands; it will be banging around in the car or the
bottom of the diaper bag or whatever. A pro might actually wear out a camera
in a couple of years shooting one hundred thousand pictures, an amateur
might shoot 20 rolls in the cameras lifetime. An eveready case isn't a
hassle if the hobbyist is shooting a roll of film every 3 days on vacation.
It's pretty cheap protection.

For my part, I hope EVERYONE uses one. It keeps the cameras in nicer
condition for when I buy them. :-) Oh, they're fine for when all you're
carrying is the camera, but how many of us do that? Factor in things
(lenses, battery packs) that make the camera not fit in its case, and they
become pretty much a waste.

For $13, I recently found a small "walking around" bag in the purse
section(!) of Wal*Mart. It's about the size and shape of a small car
battery -- black fabric, wide canvas strap, two zipper pockets on the
front, mesh pockets on the ends, and a zipper top. It'll hold a camera
body with 28-70 zoom, a 70-300 zoom, a flash and several rolls of film. A
couple of removable dividers left over from customizing the big bag
complete the transormation from purse into camera bag.

Pro's beat their equipment up.....It's strictly a tool of the trade to them.
My father told me once, "Never lend your equipment to a pro....He's put more
wear on it in a few days than you'll normally put on it in a year or more."

Holster cases are great and can be shouldered or carried on your belt. I use a
couple older Tamrac model 517 which are well padded. One case has an F4s with
80-200 2.8 which is a snug fit. Same case easily holds a body and average zoom
with room to spare for a couple smaller primes and the zipper at the top makes
it ever ready for action. A zippered pouch on front has no padding but is
still handy for notepad, film or depending where you're headed, a small
Beretta.
Best wishes,
Uncle Lucky

Thanks for everyone responded. I will check out Tamrac and LowePro
products to see which one fits better for my hiking need.
