That lens between the Brownie and the folding camera
on the left of the photo looks strange. Seems to come
down from a wide opening at one end to a small one.

That's a 1952 Thales Angenieux zoom lens for a movie camera. The
designers won a Scientific & Technical Oscar from the Hollywood
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1964 and 1989 for this
lens design. The firm is now known for their Optimo movie lenses.

I seem to be in places lately where there are old cameras. Today I
went to an exhibition at Crealde School of Art and spotted these in
the Photography office:
