Does anyone know when this is supposed to be available in the shops? How
long does canon usually take between announcement and availability - if
there is a 'usual' for Canon... I dont know, since I've never had to
wait for a lens to be released!

Doh! Just found it. According to Canon's press release:

"The EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens will retail for $1,399 RRP
including GST from November"

Are they usually accurate?

Hi Scott

I have spoken to the Canon Rep about this lens, and he said it will be
available mid november, it looks like its going to be quite a popular lens.

so 300D or 20D

I will be interesting to see just how much distortion is in the lens at
10mm.

The equivalent Nikon is reasonably good at 12mm.

Yep, I realise that. Also, have you seen this article? It's a tutorial
on how to convert your EF-S lenses into EF lenses so that you can put it
on your small sensor EF mount cameras (10D, D60 or D30):

These are my favourite quotes from the article:

"Once you've removed the mount, sawing off the bit you
don't want is pretty simple"

and

"...clean up all the bits of plastic dust, smooth off
any jagged bits with sandpaper or a small file..."

It seems to me that optics, 'jagged bits', 'sandpaper' and 'plastic
dust' etc wouldnt really go well together (: But there you go...
