Hi folks,

I am thinking about to buy the Canon 300D but now I read in a german
journal that most digital SLRs have problems in getting the correct
focus. The focus is (depending on the used lense) more in the back or
more in the front of the object that has been targetted.

They say, that reasons for these problems are
- bad justified AF sensors
- cover glass of CCD/CMOS sensor affects optical behaviour
(affects path of the light rays)
- digital cameras are more sensitive on inaccurate focus
- ...

My question: What are your experiences with focusing problems using
digital SLR cameras, especially with the Canon 300D?

I've found the focus on this camera to be very predictable. Far more
so than any of the cameras in the prosumer point/shoot market which
don't have the through the lens reassurance of something like the
300D/Rebel.

One of the reasons I pulled the trigger on the 300D as an upgrade over
my G2 was for focus predictability and I was not disappointed.

That can be a problem with any autofocus system. Some I know say that AF
stands for "Approximate Focus." They often depend on depth of field to
cover any focus errors.

I note the use of the word 'all' there - finally given up on the Sigma shite
then George? Given up trying to get it to work properly have you?

It works pretty well for me.
Using a Digital Rebel (300D) and Canon's 75-300 cheapo lens, I got
this:

Cropped (and with less resizing), this shows how good the auto
focusing can be:

Note the fact that there's a lot of stuff for the autofocus to latch
onto, but it got the bird just fine, even handheld.

Don't listen too much to people who complain, without listening to
those who seem to know how to use the equipment being complained
about.

As I read it depends on the used lenses also and probably the Sigma does
not a good job.

In my case I have a Tamron 70-300 and a Tamron macro lense which I would
like to use with the Canon 300D in addition to the Canon 28-80 lense (if
I decide for that model).

Probably these lenses could lead to similar problems. In any case I
would take all lenses to the dealer to test before buying.

Preddy (George or Georgette or by the other nom de plumes) is a known
troll. Trashes anything Canon with no data and espouses the inferior
Sigma cameras. Believe *nothing* from that source.
