Canon A40 won't connect

I have purchased this camera new about 5 yrs ago, it is a Canon A40, I
always took the card out o upload the pics to the computer, I gave the
camera to my wife and she wants to use the cable that came with the
camera to upload the pics to the computer, I tried the software that
came with the camera and updated to the new windows drivers, she is
using Win Xp. but still to no avail, I cannot get the camera to connect
to the computer. any ideas
