Hi, Folks -

Thought I would tap your wisdom before calling B&H .

I bought my little point&shoot Canon SD 1200IS from them more than a
year ago. It always functioned flawlessly. A few months ago, it said
I need a new battery (??? - I didn't use it all that much!), so I
spent way too much for a new battery. Ever since installing it, the
camera periodically poops out and tells me to get a new battery. ???

That's one problem.

But what I need help on -- that may or may not be connected -- is
this: Suddenly, last few days, when I go to upload a picture to the
compute, the camera closes; lens retracts. I have tried everything
-- plugging it into computer w/o lens open and w/lens open.

I often need to upload pix, so would appreciate any input.

I don't know about your camera problem, but my solution would be to get a
card (sd?) reader and start using that. Saves a lot of aggrivation and I
find it much more convenient than connecting a camera to the computer. A
multi-card reader is relatively inexpensive.

It sounds like there's some fault in the battery system. The camera
closes down if it senses the battery is about to fail to protect your
lens. Plugging the camera into the computer to upload via USB cable
drains the battery. If you already have a battery problem, this makes
it worse.

If your computer does not have an SD slot reader, purchase an SD card
reader and remove your card, insert it in the reader, and upload this
way. The card reader plugs into a USB port just like your present
cable does.

A card reader should cost you under $10 at any store that carries any
kind of camera accessories. Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. Buy the
cheapest one available. There's no "quality" aspect to a card reader.

A card reader is always going to be your best solution. The warning you
get you connect the camera to your computer to download image files,
regarding ensuring the batteries are fully charged should not be
ignored.
A card reader is cheap and efficient.
I carry one in my computer bag, one in my camera bag, and have another
in my desk.
I have found the Elago card readers to be a good value compact and bulletproof.

THANK YOU, Savageduck, Tim and Tony. I never THOUGHT of a card
reader! The explanation involving the faulty (?) battery & protecting
the lens makes sense. I will pick up a card reader, and do battle
with the battery folks separately.

Does your camera use a removeable card? If so, remove it, put it in an
appropriate card reader and use WinExplorer to copy/paste it.

Yes, it does. Card reader I ordered on-line from source recommended
by Savage Duck arrived today. Installed, photos uploaded. Yay!

Problem: Internet Explorer doesn't offer a "save as", but only a
"send to". Choices are limited. I WANT to send to "Desktop, My
Pictures". But it will only let me send to Desktop. So I have to
perform an additional operation - drag and drop to My Pictures.

Is there a workaround?

That sounds like a particular OS issue. Since I am a Mac user and don't
experience this sort of problem, I will defer to the Windows users on
this one.

Anyway I am glad that you have got a card reader and are at least able
to move the image files from camera to computer.
