OK... before you jump in, I know the answer. But I had a hard time
explaining this to a photo shop in Kauai.

Having lunch (a Subway sub... one of the few things my Aussie palette could
accommodate while travelling) I noticed a sign on the local camera shop
window saying "We burn your digital camera cards to CD"

Cool! I need to get some done as my Image Tank was full....

So I ask, "How much to burn a 512 CF card to CD?"

The reply... "Sorry we don't do the GB cards"

Me: "No it's a 512"

Camera shop: "How many megabytes is that?

Me: "Ummm???? ....512"

Camera Shop: "No, sorry, we can't do a GB"

Me: "But it's 512???" ....."It's only half a GB"

Camera Shop: "We can do 256 Mb"

Me thinking: Ok perhaps they will do two burns for my 512.....

Me: "OK How much is it for a 256?"

Camera Shop checking price list: "It's $12.99 for a 256 and $17.99 for a GB"

Me: "Ummm???? But you don't do GB cards?????"

Camera Shop: "Yeah that's right"

Me giving up: "Ok, thanks very much, I may pop back later when I have my
cards with me." ......NOT!!

<snip MB story>

I had a similar thing happen in Japan.

I dropped off a 512mb card and expected it to be burned
onto a 650mb cd for 1000Y or so. I came back to
find he had burned it onto THREE cd's for whatever
reason and charged me three times the price. After a short
discussion where I explained that I would not be paying
for three cd's as it should have fit onto one, he gave in
and charged me for the one.

Be careful in Japan, because some shops run the CF
through their own software which modifies your images!!
It's not always just a straight copy from the CF -> CD.

There is actually less storage than what you think on your CF cards...

Manufacturers use the proper definition of mega, which is 1000, operating
systems and other software uses a measure of
1024. So when it says it is a 512 MB card, it has 512,000,000 bytes
available, which according to windows/camera software/etc, you have 488
megabytes available. Even less once it is formatted and the file system is
put on there.

As an aside, the proper term to use for what is called megabytes by
windows/etc is mebibytes...

Some people reckon they are being ripped off by the storage manufacturers,
but in fact they are correct. The term megabyte has been hijacked

I'll shut up now...

I agreed with that. I believe the manufacturers did this for their own
marketing.

But they are technically correct. It is the OS that is using incorrect
terminology...

Try not to format the HD. What you see in the bios, you will never got
512MB as full 512MB.

I believe not the OS. I believe because the computer terminology
(machine language) is different than in normal life, which 1kg =
1000gr. But the manufacturers use the normal terminology, which 1MB is
1000kB not 1024KB. However, when we look at it in the computer or
Digital cameras, the machine translates differently.
