I have a nikon d200, the exposure mode is currently set to "M" (as per
the "M" in the upper left corner of the control panel). My user manual
says to hold down the mode button, and rotate the main command dial to
select another exposure mode (e.g., programmed auto or "P").
Unfortunately, when I press the mode button, the control panel goes
blank except for the number of shots remaining.

As a side note, I tried the infamous 2-button reset, however, the
exposure mode is not reset to "P" in this manner either.

Please help... please please please...

You should be able to hold down the mode button and set your metering
preference using the main dial, the one on the back of the camera that
defaults to setting the shutter speed. The screen does go blank except
for the mode, shutter speed, and f-stop. If something else is
happening you may want to call Nikon service.
