Hi all

I have a D40x and various lenses but am interested in going for a
wider angle. The 12-24mm lens looks interesting but would my D40x
handle it well?

I ask because on the Nikon site under the accessories list, most
lenses from 18mm up are listed but nothing under 18mm.

It should work fine. It's a DX lens and the D40x having a crop of 1.5x
should handle it well. If it were full frame it wouldn't be compatible.

Yes. As well as others. The D40x not having an AF screw drive can not drive
the Tokina, which I own, nor the Tamaron

tokina has announced a new 12-24mm that does have a focus motor for the
d40/d60.

No, many full frame lenses can work just fine on the D40x. I have
a couple of DX DSLRs and they're fully compatible with several of my
full frame lenses. They all focus using the camera's motor using a
screw drive, so they wouldn't be able to auto-focus using a D40,
D40x or D60. The 12-24mm f/4 lens has a Silent Wave Motor, so the
D40x won't be limited to manual focusing. Full frame lenses are
sometimes preferred with DX bodies, since they probably won't be
nearly as subject to corner defects (such as vignetting) when used
with smaller DX sensors.

You're right. A full frame lens will cover more than the sensor area and
still can be used with advantages like you said. I don't know what I was
thinking of.

Probably the same as what I'm thinking of when I misstate
something I actually know - nothing. When I do it I'm usually
guilty of typing while asleep, or maybe that substitute for
thinking, dreaming.

Well thanks all for the help - I found this lens on ebay for £410 - a
great deal! And I've tried it out tonight - it's working fine. So
thanks again all
