I tried recording a video to a dual layer DVD disc as it was too big
to fit on a single layer DVD disc but when I play the video on my DVD
player only the first layer of the video will play. If I play the DVD
video on my computer then I can play both layers of the disc. If there
some way during the recording to DVD to tell my dvd player that it
needs to switch over to the next layer when it's finished playing the
first layer?

I often wonder in a commercial music video DVD how they can get the
DVD recorder to switch to a second layer between songs and not when a
song is being preformed to avoid the slight delay during the switching
over of layers.

Start with... What software are you using?

I use DVD Architect for making DVDs and it lets you pick the point
where you want the layer change to be so that the studder is minimal.

I can't remember what software I was usung at the time as it was a
wehile since I tried writing to a double layer DVD and I've tried a
few video editing programs since.

There might be some special mark that written to the disc to
indicate to the DVD player that the disc is dual layered and when to
change to the second layer. In my case prehaps the program I was using
did not write this information. It might be possible that my DVD
player does not like DVD-R DL type discs and sees them as single layer
discs.
