Most cameras do remember the count. But they also usually you to
choose what happens after changing or formatting cards, to either
continue the picture numbers from where you left off, or to restart
the naming sequence from number 0001. Cameras can sometimes get
confused, an example being if you put a card in your camera that was
taken from another similar camera that hadn't taken the same number
of pictures.

I'm at a disadvantage since I don't have your camera in front of
me to examine, and don't know the actual contents of the memory
card. One possibility to check if your memory card has over 1260
pictures still on it is what the number you're seeing in the display
actually represents.
When routinely chimping after taking some pictures, the number
most of my cameras first displays is simply a number that's
assigned, based on the total number of images on the card and its
position in the sequence, not the number that's part of the
filename. The 'filename' number can be seen, but it's usually
displayed on a different screen where it will show not just a number
but the entire filename, including the '.JPG' extension. So if this
is the case and you've transferred all of the pictures to a
computer, deleting the ones on the card, if you take ten more
pictures some time in the future, the last one might have a file
name / number of CIMG1410.JPG, but when looking on the camera's
display it would appear to have the number 10, or 0010, etc. If you
delete picture number 0003, then the last picture that previously
appeared as number 0010 would now appear as number 0009, but if you
go to the other screen that shows the actual filename, it would
still show CIMG1410.JPG.
If this isn't the case, it's still hard to say what the problem
is. Some cameras keep an index database file on the card that may
have been corrupted. Another possibility is that the camera's
computer has crashed, not fatally, but still needing a reset get it
back on track. If I was in your position I'd try to reset the
camera and then I'd get another card for it, any size will do, even
a tiny 8mb card. Format it in camera and see what the filename and
picture sequence numbers are.
