The short version is that the smaller the number (F3.3), the larger
the lens opening. The larger the lens opening, the less depth of
field. Depth of field is what is in focus, so by restricting the
depth of field you are making what is in front of, and behind, the
object focussed on to be out-of-focus. Small numbers mean blurred
backgrounds. However, if your background is close to your subject, it
will less in focus than the subject but not really blurred.
