Mr. Whiskey, Sir,
I wandered over here because I just bought a Canon video camera, but I
am familiar with that DSLR.
My kid bought me a Nikon D40 when I retired this year and I found that
it reignited my love for photography.
After 30+ years as a newspaper photographer, I moved over to the tech
side as telecom manager and pretty much stopped shooting about a dozen
years ago.
Point and shoot digital cameras were neat, but I was frustrated by the
lag between pushing the button and actual exposure. I also didn't like
the surprise between what I saw in the viewfinder and what appeared in
the file.
If something like the D40 had been around 15 or 20 years ago, I'd
still be shooting pictures as a pro.
Here are some examples of low light photos I shot in our pressroom
with the D40. You can tell that there is a wide variety of lighting
and there's not a whole lot of it in some cases.

Most of the shots here were done with a D40

Could they have been done with a similar Canon, sure.
Here's a review my kid did on his Nikon D700. There is considerable
discussion about other Nikon gear here, too.

As far as the guy who jumped you for posting your question in a Canon
group, here's my philosophy about hardware: it ain't the camera that
makes the picture. People don't walk up to a concert pianist and say,
"That was beautiful music. What kind of piano do you use?"
