The adapter for Canon FD lenses unfortunately includes an extra
element that considerably degrades optical quality.
But apart from Canon's own legacy mount, it's true that you can use
many other types of lenses on Canon EOS cameras. I have successfully
used Carl Zeiss (Contax), Leica R, Pentax (K bayonet and M42 screw)
and Nikon F mount lenses on my Canon EOS 5D. I currently use a
mixture of Canon and Nikon glass, plus one lens from Samyang in Nikon
AIS mount.
