When turning on the scanner, the Ready and Power lights flash on and
off continuously forever. I assume its got a failure, and obviously
there is no point in attempting to fix this 5 year old scanner?

That thing is so-so-so-so OLD. Get a new one
I command you!! Technology is way beyond it
