Spam has increased, but it looks even worse when nobody is asking questions
or providing useful information. Most of the time it's safe to just hit the
"mark all"
button when you visit these days.

I find the Spam annoying too, but not that hard to ignore. I just read what
is
of interest to me then hit the "mark all" button on the way out.

The only way around it is to change the group to a moderated format, but
then
someone has to read every post and declare it worthy before we can see it.
In some situations it might work out, but much of the time we need to get
answers as quick as possible and having a moderator in the way would be
a problem, especially if the moderator is sleeping or on vacation. I wonder
if there is a way to declare a visitor to be "acceptable" after a post being
approved. That way each visitor gets checked once and approved or
declared Spam. Spam would just be deleted, and the rest of life could
continue just as it is now but without the Spam. A first time visitor might
have to wait a bit for the moderator to get around to checking the post.

well. judging from some of my clients attitudes, and certainly from even
more of my students, there's nothing left to ask about. they know it
all. heck, they've got windows movie maker or imovie, what more do they
need? and if they want examples of bad video, youtube, et al, they have
plenty of examples. unfortunately, it seems youtube etc., now sets the bar
for quality, and it's so abismally low, almost anything they produce
looks like a silk purse in comparison. the problem lies in explaining to
them that their little 'masterpiece', is little better...

I see very little spam here. Perhaps you need to tweak yur spam filters.

This newsgroup has very little spam. The notion that they have "taken
over" this newsgroup is completely without evidence. And what little
spam there is here can be quickly identified from the subject line and
just passed over and ignored. Repeat offenders get plonked.

I read other newsgroups where there are multiple spam messages
every day. That is most certainly NOT the case here on r.v.p I can
count the number of spam messages in a week on my fingers.

Mr. Ford, you are either hyper-sensitive or else you aren't filtering
out the obvious repeat offendors.

Dunno what you guys are seeing, but I have seen very little spam
on this newsgroup in the last several months.

There is a moderated video newsgroup news:rec.video.professional
Or I should say that there *was* r.v.p because of the problem of
arranging for competent and timely coverage. That newsgroup is
now dead (along with hundreds of other moderated newsgroups).
We do not have sufficient resources or interest here to switch to
a moderated newsgroup. It is not a practical option IMHO.

There are plenty of web-based forums for discussion of specialty
topics (such as dvinfo.net, hv20.com, etc.) I am more frequently
visiting those newsgroups simply because they concentrate discussion
of specific topics in a way that would be impossible here. But that
doesn't change the fact that web-based discussion forums are all
horrible compared to the most basic newsreader client.

Or he's reading it online at googlegroups.com where there's a
horrendous amount of it :-(

I have ZERO sympathy for people who read this (or any other
newsgroup) on Google Groups. Google is the SOURCE of the
spam and ENABLER of the spammers. People who use Google
deserve what they get.

I just switched to a free news server (thank you bellsouth/AT&T for
canceling newsgroup access)and it seems to have blocked all spam in this
group...at least so far..
