Default Position of Sun

Hi

I need some help to work out the position of the sun at a given time.

I take photographs of Railways and wanted to know if there is a simple way
of calculating where the sun will be at a given time in relation the the
direction of a rail line.

Regards

Mike Cook

Many, many years ago as a Boy Scout I was taught that if you pointed the
hour hand of a watch at the sun, south was half way between the hour hand
and 12 on the watch dial. This is not precise, but would seem to be close
enough to use in reverse to answer your question. Gary Q
