Here's my take on it, for what it's worth...

Quality;

I've found that I tend to shoot far more pictures since going digital
(currently a 10D, which I find is excellent) than I ever did when I was
shooting film. This, and the convenience of being able to see immediately
what's going on when I shoot, has definately led to an increase in the
overall quality of my output. This is particularly true in those unusual
lighting situations, or when you are looking for a particular
effect/bracketing etc. Digital wins hands down.

Price;

I'd hate to think of the cost in film terms, of the amount of exposures I've
shot in digital. Yes, I spent a lot of money on equipment - but I can now
shoot freely without concerning myself with the cost of film/processing.

Fun;

Personally, I don't miss processing at home at all. I can do far more on a
computer, and I don't have to get my hands wet.

In (my) real world, the quality is at the very least comparable to film use,
much more fun, and opens up whole new avenues that I would never have
explored before. I'm can't slate film, but for me I honestly don't expect to
shoot another roll...

Rob.

It's effectively paying in advance.

I quite enjoy developing and printing but I can certainly see that digital
is far more convenient.

I believe that there is a place for both, and that there will be for quite
some time. I've just bought a 10D, but I don't expect it to replace film -
or for large prints to be an improvement over 35mm film.

Pat Chaney <(E-Mail Removed)> spake thusly to the assembled multitudes, agog
with barely concealed anticipation:

According to their website, a Mac version should be released in 'Q3, 2003',
IOW sometime in the next three months.

Well for MAC's there's no RAW converter to match Capture 1 unfortunately.
Adobe RAW has its fans for converting Canon CRW's but as far as I know it's
yet to support the 10D without a 'hack'. I think more details on this might
be found here ... http://www.outbackphoto.com/

Neat Image has a MAC version planned for release soon.

PowerRetouche's other products (I have them all) are a mixed bag. Some are
very useful indeed - the anti-aliasing & transparency filters come to mind.
The Sharpness Editor Pro though is the jewel in the crown of Jan Esmann's
plug-ins - It's unique in its ability to actually sharpen without modifying
contrast.

For upsizing there is another product that does a great job (and works with
MAC's I think) - S-Spline 2 Pro ...
http://www.shortcut.nl/redirect.php?page=products
It's almost as effective as Qimage, but unfortunately will upsize the actual
file itself unlike Qimage's 'temporary' upsize to the printer spool.

For lots of MAC 10D utilities see here ...
http://www.fredmiranda.com/actionsm ... Some of these are very good indeed
(though none quite match the likes of Neat Image, Sharpenss Editor, etc.
IMHO). Still, they are cheap, effective and great time savers

Thanks, I missed that. I'll keep an eye on their web site for news.

<useful stuff snipped>

Thanks for all the info Simon. I may well end up with Capture One but even
the Mac Pro version doesn't support the 10D until Oct this year. I don't
fancy using a hex editor on the Adobe Raw plug-in, but I'm sure it will
support the 10D soon - and almost certainly be integrated into PS8. Adobe
won't say of course (and neither would Phase one about a Mac LE version).

In the meantime I'll continue researching and try the other links you
offered.
