JVC GRD50 DV No picure, Is something slowly dying ?

I have a JVC GRD50 DV camera, when I turn it I only get static on the
screen. I tried turning it off and on again, very occasionally (approx 1 in
30 times)it work as before with everything in focus. Playback works fine.
Is something with the lens slowly dying inside?
