As you probably know already, be sure to keep a UV or 1A filter on your
lenses whenever possible. I have been fortunate to only have to clean small blemishes or smudges, so I don't usually wipe the entire element. (Except for filters) I found a premoistened lens tissue sold in drug stores called "Wipe'n Clear". These come in foil packs similar to the hand cleaner packets. These work well for wiping off a smudge and are great for cleaning filters. As others have said, it is critically important to blow or brush off any dust specks before touching the glass. Those small specks may actually be a tiny grit of hard material and sliding that over the glass is a guaranteed scratch.
