The only problem with Matrox is the newer cards are much more expensive than
for example a dual head nVidia based card. And when you're not editing, an
nVidia card is awesome for gaming besides.

3D aside, I'd recommend either Matrox or nVidia. I'm running a Matrox G400
now but the next system I build will have an nVidia Geforce 4 Ti4200 (about
a hundred bucks) dual head card in it because I do like to play the
occasional game.

Both Matrox and nVidia have very good Linux support if that matters.

I for one would never install games on my editing box or anything else that
is not necessary for project work. Keeping your pro system pro goes a
long ways to keeping it stable and uncluttered with garbage. I have a
seperate system for gaming/internet/e-mail. I do agree that Nvidia or the
newer ATI cards are the best options for 3d games. My editing box is a
Matrox G550 dual, and my game/general system is a geforce 3 GTS.
