Can .ai files be opened in PS v5

I have Photoshop v5.0.2 and have attempted to open a ".ai" file. It goes to
the "Rasterize Generic EPS Format" box but when I click on "OK" I get the
message "Could not open the document because the parser module cannot open
the file." I looked in the Photoshop discussion forum on the Adobe site and
found some messages indicating that version 7 would open an Illustrator
file. Can version 5 not open these files? Is there some add-in that will
allow it in version 5? I'd just like to know before I go back and ask for
the file in a different format.
