What settings are best in Adobe Streamline 4 for tracing bitmap images
of trees, plants, and other images which are difficult to trace?

Totally depends on the quality of the photo...
The supplied documentation describes the function of the variables in the
'conversion setup'...
More than likely, you will need to greatly reduce the detail (color) of your
photo before trying to convert to vector...
