What I do is change the image to indexed color (click on image>mode>indexed color) because that's what a gif is... 2. Then I choose what I want to be transparent (click on select>color range)... 3. Make sure fuzziness is at 0 and the selection button is picked and not image... 4. Click on the color in the image in the photoshop window that you want to be transparent... 5. Go back to your color range pop-up window and click on the eyedropper with the plus sign... 6. Go back to your image and drag your curser along the color you want to be invisible (so you get alot of the little color pixels chosen), you should see in the pop-up window your image taking shape... 7. Then click and drag on the fuzziness bar until your image is crisp (or as crisp as possible)... 8. Click the OK button in your pop-up window so it disappears... 9. You should now have marching ants all around the color you want to disappear... 10. Now click on your eraser and erase the color you don't want to it becomes transparent... 11. Click on Help>Export Transparent Image and follow the wizard... 12. Save as a gif (you could go png though I find it doesn't always work) Hope that helps! Babs |

>[snip of 11 more steps] You go through all that work to make a transparent GIF? My God! Save for Web is SO much easier. When you use Save for Web, whatever is transparent in the original image stays transparent. You create the image with a transparent background in the first place, and it remains that way. You MUST save the image as a GIF--JPEG does not permit transparency. -- Rude T-shirts for a rude age: http://www.villaintees.com Art, literature, shareware, polyamory, kink, and more: http://www.xeromag.com/franklin.html |

Web is > SO much easier. Yes, "save for web" is easier... She's obviously learning, I thought it would be nice to show her some extra steps... Someone else had already said "save for web", I just thought I'd show her a different way to do it... Those steps come in handy and hardly take any time at all... > When you use Save for Web, whatever is transparent in the original image stays > transparent. You create the image with a transparent background in the first > place, and it remains that way. What if she did not have a transparent area to start with? I showed her how to make it transparent... Creating from scratch is one thing, modifying an image is another... > You MUST save the image as a GIF--JPEG does not permit transparency. I never said anything about a jpg... I did mention png though... Babs |
