Reduce Picture to a Specific Number of Colors

Discussion in 'Photoshop Tutorials' started by Harold Morgan, Jul 7, 2003.

  1. I would like to be able to convert a series of pictures to contain a maximum
number of colors to 16. I then plan to run them through ImpressionX and
create a custom coloring book for my niece.

However, the posterize effect doesn't seem to be giving me the effect I
need. How do I reduce a pictures to a certain number of colors, or perhaps
to translate a photo's palette to one that I specify?

    Thanks in advance, Harold

If posterize doesn't do what you want you could do a save for web to a 16
    color gif.

Try under filters, artistic, cut. I'm guessing from memory, the
latest issue of photoshop user had this in it.

    Reducing Colors

:) I figured out how do to it in CS3. First reduced your image in size, say to 6"X4", then save for web & devices, (alt-F, D). Then save for .png-8, you will find the option for the number of colors on the right hand side of the options.
