A basic new Logitech webcam's .wmv (asf) files won't load in Vegas 10
pro. They just make a zero length bar on the timeline, which I can
right-click properties for, but nothing to look at in the video
department. Virtualdub says it doesn't support asf files when I try
that. I'm just trying to shrink the size for web upload.

Vegas has never supported .asf files so you're SOL :(

AVC (Any Video Converter) works hard trying but the resulting file
    cannot be read. Uninstall.

    Is it just impossible?

Can I run a different generic driver on the webcam which produces usable
files? I only paid $30 for the webcam. Win7 64 bit.

I can capture video through Vegas using the logitech driver and that
works. I really wanted that older clip but at least I can capture usable
    video now.

Have you tried Windows Movie Maker ? It's available in WinXP.
If you're lucky, maybe there's some output format from WMM
that you can use to get back to Vegas.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Systems_Format

There is some kind of equivalent of WMM for Vista/Win7 here.

    http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

Microsoft also has a package that is supposed to add formats on
output, but there's nothing useful in there (i.e. to aid escaping
    the Microsoft zoo).

That a look at the site www.videohelp.com you might find useful information
and a suitable converter program to convert the files.

Alright, there was a lot of relevant discussion and offhand mention of
SUPER, which I forgot I had and that worked!

    :)
