I am attempting to outline a section of a photo using the Magnetic
Lasso Tool in PS7 so that I can subsequently blur the background.

Having selected this tool I start at the bottom LH edge of the photo
and eventually get to the bottom RH edge .

The problem I now have is I don't know how to deselect this Tool. As a
result , if I attempt to move the curser up to the Tool icon in order
to click it again ( thus , I thought , deselecting it ) this merely
results in bringing the " thread " all across the photo in all the
wrong places .

How , once the use of this Lasso tool is complete , do you deselect it
thus leaving the threaded area as desired ?

You have to close the selection first. CTRL+click usually does the trick.
After that, if you're unhappy with any area of the selection you can
add/subtract from the selection by selectiong the icons on the toolbar.
