    Hello,

The time has come for me to upgrade my scanner, and I'm looking for
    suggestions.
I don't have a ton of money to spend, I'm just looking for a good
price/performance ratio. The scanner would have to be a flatbed. The
models I'm looking at now are in the HP ScanJet 3970ish range (2400x2400
dpi, 48bit). This particular model, and several others in that price range,
include a neg/slide scanner. Since I've never used one, is this a
worthwhile tool? Is the quality noticeably better that just scanning the
    print?

I know that this is a topic that's come up quite a bit but I haven't been
able to find satisfactory answers to my questions searching the r.p.e.35mm
    archives.

    Thanks in advance.
