    wondering what people think the 18-55mm kit lens is worth, if buying it
    new, or as new?

    thanks,

    Afaik, you can't buy it new, it's only available in the kit. I wouldn't
    lose any sleep over it though, it's not the greatest piece of glass
    ever produced.

    If you're looking for an equivalent,
    * Canon EF 28-90mm f4.0-45.6 USM (~$240 new)
    * Canon EF 35-80mm f4.0-5.6 (~$110 new)
    * Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM ($900)

    I got one with the 20D and assumed it would never get used...but I'm
    pleasantly surprised by it, so much so that when I saw one here that had
    been modified to suit a non EF-S mount I jumped at the chance,

    What's it worth? I bought the modded one for $160 I think it was so I'd say
    an unmodded one may fetch $120- $150.00.

    A far better lens at the same price point is the 50 1.8...That one may well
    be the best lens per $ in the Universe I'd say. But it's simply a 50mm lens.

    I have mine still in the 20D box and never touched it (I have L's that cover
    the same FL) but it is not something that I would part with, as it's
    greatest value may only be realised when (and if) I sell the 20D down that
    track.

    Something to consider for those thinking of parting with theirs perhaps....
    What will be a more attractive second hand purchase for someone, a 20D or a
    20D with a lens?

    The main problem with its resale value is that the lens currently only
    fits three cameras and many of these already came with the lens in the
    kit. This narrows your market substantially.

    That is why you spend an hour or two modifying it which increases it's
    value by 50% and adds the 10D, D30 and D60 to the cameras that it can
    be used on
