    G'day,
I've been putting off getting an SLR for some time now, due to the cost of
course. Just checking on eBay, seems that 2nd hand units are very few and
    far in between.

Anyone know of some alternatives to eBay? I don't mean online auctions, just
anything where a few 2nd hand units might be found... perhaps the trading
post? I'm not in a major city, so going directly to shops is not really an
    option.

Any kind of info on this topic welcome.
    Tnx

No! He is the first owner... It is a first hand. If he sells it it is then a
    second hand...

On a very little bit more serious note... Do like me, convince all your rich
friends that the new ones are much better and that you can even take care of
the old one for them :) Worked for me.

    hand.

some of the major retailers will happily work with you, and let you know
what is in their windows and can post it etc.
unless you are experienced checking second hand equipment, I would recommend
    ensureing a guarantee.

I have been offered to many duds to trust a 2nd hand seller unless I had
recourse. Many people have fared well with e-bay, but I don't think I could
    take the risk.
new cameras are so reasonably priced nowadays that they are a serious
option. a new SLR and lense for around $400..... when did that ever happen
    before?

Whether you keep it or sell it - its second hand the moment you use it.

Aye but the real point is it was very expensive to buy....

If a woman that delivers pamphlets to mailboxes can afford one then they are
    not expensive.

Wrong - second-hand means it is in or is destined for the hands of the
second owner. According to your theory there would be no such thing as an
    original owner.

Tell your wife she is actually second-hand!
Single? - well now you know why.

WTF ? Ask your insurance company when you value goods and yeah, get a clue
    too.

Fancy calling a woman second hand ......... *shakes head*

You really are a slow learner - and still wrong. I give up.
Good idea - shaking head may reduce random thought behaviour and improve
    comprehension skills.
