They took them down, but not before people captured the specs. Appeared
to be authentic, but who knows?

    50D: 15.1 megapixel, 6.3/3 FPS, Live View
7D: 18 megapixel, 5 FPS, CF & SD, Live View

Guess we'll know for sure pretty soon.

Ah yes, the annual "LeakVertisements" have started, once is a mistake, but
Canon and Nikon now use "leaks" as part of their advertisment campaign.

Why would this camera need both CF and SD cards?

I think Canon is worried about lost sales to the D700 and D300, and they
need to make it clear that they have competing models coming out in a
    few weeks.

What lost sales? Can you cite a verifiable source? D700 12.1 megapixel FF @
$3300 CAD vs. 5D 12.8 megapixel FF @ $2300 CAD (7D is likely to be less
    expensive than the D700) D300 12.3 megapixel APS-C $1,650 CAD vs. 40D body
$1100 CAD (50D body slated at $1500 CAD)

Look at the market share data.

    2006
    ----
    Canon: 46.7%
    Nikon: 33.0%
    Other: 20.3%

    2007
    ----
    Canon: 42.7%
    Nikon: 40.0%
    Other: 17.3%

For 2008, Nikon will likely pass Canon because Nikon has concentrated on
the lower end models more than Canon (until the recent XSi anyway).
Nikon already passed Canon in Japan. In Japan, for 2007, Nikon was at
43.8%, Canon was at 40.0%, Pentax was at 5.8%, the rest shared 10.4%).

Canon does have the only professional, high-resolution, full-frame
digital SLR, but in terms of unit sales the 1Ds Mark III sells very few.
The D300 and D700 are selling extremely well, while Canon system users
are waiting for the 5D and 40D replacements. It see-saws back and forth,
since each company has different product release dates.

I think that it's interesting that in Japan the second tier
manufacturers have even less market share than in the ROW.

    Yeah, me too.

However these were actually on the Chinese Canon web site, so maybe
    they're real.

It makes sense that the 50D would be higher resolution than the 12
megapixel XSi and D300, and that the 7D would be higher resolution than
    the D700.

Auto-ISO (FULL RANGE; not stupid 100-400) in manual exposure mode?

When is Canon going to wake up, and realize that photographers need real,
    functional auto-ISO?

Are you sure about this? I saw 100-1600 auto-ISO for the 50D. I think
that going beyond that (all the way to ISO 6400) wouldn't give good
results and there'd be complaints about it.

    does. :)

Maybe in terms of some features, etc, but the 5D is still better IQ-wise
except for read noise at base ISO. Shot noise is better in the 5D at all
ISOs, and better in read noise by about a stop at high ISOs.

Obviously, it will have slightly higher resolution, but we know nothing yet
    of noise characteristics.

No; that's why it was a question and not a statement.
That depends on the mode, I guess, but there's never any point in getting
a blurry image to avoid noise, unless a blurry image is your desired
    composition.

I want auto-ISO in manual exposure mode, and if I have a fixed f-stop and
shutter speed, there is no point in the camera stopping at any ISO in
that context; that would make no sense whatsoever, as it will only screw
up flash exposure compensation, and give a dark, worthless review image
and (embedded) JPEG. Might as well be ISO-unlimited in that context.

  15. It doesn't say it NEEDs them, but it can use either - or both should you
happen to have such a collection.

I also very rarely use burst modes. Shouldn't they be able to have that
as a switchable option in the firmware?

It wouldn't, obviously. But if you have a supply of one type of card but not
the other, it would be nice not to have to add to the cost of converting by
    buying all new cards.

Thanks for keeping us honest, John. You arrived just in the nick
of time. With more than a dozen - now approaching two dozen
messages, this thread was floundering. Then you arrived and in a
quick flurry of replies introduced what we must have been
subconsciously trying to avoid - the discussion of noise. I swear,
you'd prefer feces to fine filet if it had less noise. But where it
comes to your promised response to Roger, remarkably little noise
from your direction. If fact, not a peep. How about that!
