At least for dynamic range / exposure latitude there are workarounds such as
in-camera HDR or sensors with variable exposure time per pixel, just to make a
couple of example. Even a sensor with small well capacity can be made capable
    of high dynamic range.

For noise issues, small pixel worksrounds exist as well (for instance combining
multiple shots), but these are not as good as those for dynamic range.

Sony obviously is pushing at all fronts.
So, they are offering multiple different cameras in the a7 form factor:
    - general use (a7)
    - high resolution/studio/landscape (a7R)
    - ultra high sensitivity, big fat pixels (a7S)

This should give some idea of the new sensor capabilities and the
    low-contrast mode:

Definitely impressive. And I do not really need more than 12 Mpixels.
