but dont want to buy something crap. I know nothing about todays camcorders
as the last one i brought was around 15 years ago!
Can anyone recommend a model or free websites that review them

Its for basic kids growing up/family movies/holidays etc

Heard that mini DV with DV-in is best so will go for that

    Got budget of approx £500 - £700

One last side question: I've always fancied doing some clay animation for
fun, but would probably need something that took one frame at a time, does
anyone know of a 'cheap' video cam that will do this? and where i can get
    one.

cheers and thanks for any advice

IMHO you might look at the Sony HC40 at £480 from
    http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/

or since you're just a little short at the TRV80 (voted camcorder of the
    year) at £742 from http://www.pantheronline.co.uk/
With the right video editor you can do this.

My Sony PC-105E has "interval" and "frame" recording modes. In frame recording
mode it records 6 frames and then stops for every press of the record button. I
guess you could then use something like VirtualDub or TMPGEnc to to throw away 4
or 5 of every 6 frames.

The PC-105E is obsolete as of last year but I'd be suprised if the replacement
    models (PC-107E, PC-109E) don't offer something similar.
