After Effects mask - why does the outer area become dark?

Whenever I apply a mask with After Effects (the ancient v4.1), just as
in Photoshop, I can apply any effect or filter to the area inside.
But unlike Photoshop, which leaves the outer area as is - After
    Effects darkens the outer area.

I can do a workaround where I drage the same clip down into the comp
timeline - fo some reason that brightens the outer area up just as it
should be (like the original clip) and does not affect anything I have
done to the inner area of the selection (for exmaple, if I applied a
Levels filter to brighten it - it stays bright).

    Any idea why this happens?

Probably the Transfer mode. Change it to Screen or Add and see what happens.
