I think I have narrowed down my selection of a beginning lighting kit to the
    Alien Bee "Beginner Bee" Kit.

Anyone have any experience with Alien Bee?

Is this kit a decent bargain?

Thanks once again for the advice.

Not directly, but I've always heard good things, they're designed by the
designer of a pro company's line of studio lights (White Lightning IIRC)

The design is very well thought out and flexible. A full 5 stops of control on
    the flash is a great feature. (1/1 .. 1/32).
If I recall correctly, ABs "800" is a 400 W-s monolight. Given its features,
and that amount of power, it does seem to be a very good deal.
I picked up two hardly used 200 W-s monos for CAD$700 (about US$450 at the time)
.... so check out the local camera stores that might be selling a used kit for
    somebody...

One monolight is a bit limiting, they use to have combo deals that were pretty
good and saved a bit of money.

    Cheers,
    Alan

Check out this site: The fellow is pretty gushy and there's lots of info...

    http://davidweikel.com/E20_Page/alienbees/bees.shtml

The last phots of the circuit boards lead one to think they could do a home
improvement to boost the power... just add the caps ... but I'd bet other parts
of the flash would need to be improved as well, as well higher powered flash tubes.

    Cheers,
    Alan.
