I have always been led to believe that this group has always been about
photographic art, technique and technology but judging by some of the
websites being plugged in this group this group may as well be called
    alt.snapshots.

Let's face it, most of the blog sites and other sites advertised via this
group contain photos that are, quite frankly, rubbish. I do not have a
problem with people asking for critique and advice on how to improve their
photos but I do object to people who assume their photos are so good that we
should all go off and look at their sites and galleries. For those of you
who think that your holiday snaps or snaps of your pets (and you know who
you are) make you a "photographer" (in the creative sense) you are very much
mistaken. We, as a group, are happy and more than pleased to offer advice
and critique but please do not assume we are all interested in family snaps
    of little Johny's first birthday.

I think some of my own work is quite good but that is my personal
perspective on my own creativity. I would not dream of assuming my pictures
are good enough to be seen by others unless I was asking others opinions and
    advice.

    So there!

I suggest you use your option to ignore postings that don't
    interest you.

Perhaps the OP is confused. He was looking for art.photography, but found
    alt.photography instead...

It is not me who is cofused but those who thinks that rubbish snapshots are
of interest to the group. As I pointed out in my OP this group is for
people to discuss photographic.technique, technology and art. If people
must post links to galleries, at least make sure the photos are of quality.
If unsure ask opinion and do not assume they are worth viewing.

I am happy to look at other peoples work if it is good. Trouble is too many
people are plugging absolute rubbish. Again, if people are unsure if their
work is good enough for the viewing public at least have the courtesy to ask
opinion rather than assume their photos are any good. After all I would not
go to the Tate Gallery in London and expect to see paintings and scribbles
by a 5 year old. Their parent may think they are good but the rest of us
know they are crap. There are many many more advertised galleries (and blog
sites) in this group that are are rubbish than there are good.

    By whom...?!
    Roses, etc.
    Beauty, beholder, etc.
Preference noted... and, whoops, forgotten, in favor of my own
    prejudices.
Perhaps, but a prospective shooter has to start somewhere.
Which group do you presume to speak for?
You seem to imply that "art" may consist solely of "content", or that
family photos can not be "artful".
    There's a surprise.
    You don't say...
I'd guess that's probably a good idea, for you.
    Where? "Presumptionland"?

Whether a galley link should be posted, and where, and what that
gallery should contain seems to me to be a tad outside your area of
    expertise, whatever that may be.

Crikey! You don't think it could have been set up do you?

    ;-)

joking aside, it's a fabulous photograph on many levels, just goes to
show family photos can be art too.

Yup! There's a reason why some family shots are enjoyed by folks who are not
in the family, that has just little to do with the talent of the
    photographer.

One lesson I learned early in life is not to project my tastes onto others.
If I like or dislike something, there will surely be plenty of others who
    disagree.

Besides, there is this little liberal democratic concept called freedom of
    expression. Ever heard of it?

Now you have me confused. I guess I must confuse easily, but how does one
get an opinion on the merits of an image without posting the image.

There is a difference with "please look at my photos, I think they are
great" and "please look at my photos and tell me what you think".

Simple solution. Don't look and don't comment if the poster doesn't ask the
    way you would like.
I have not yet lost the ability to learn, even from some shots that many
    would readily call trash.
Why stifle a person who has good, but as yet undeveloped potential, simply
because you don't like the way someone else asks you to look at their
    images.

I am not worthy to lick the Fixer from Thy boots
Thou art the Greatest Photographer in the history of the World
Thou knowest the Secret of Photography
Ansel Adams was but a mere Shadow of Thy Greatness
I am but a worm soaked in Photo-Flo compared to Thy Greatness
My photographs are not worthy of Wrapping Fish
My photographs offend All who are Above my Lowly Station
My photographs offend even the Untouchables cleaning the Latrine
    Oh Great Glorious Beneficent MC
Knowing that they would Offend Thee
Still I venture to ask Thy permission to Publicly display my Photographs
Please, I beg of Thee, Thou mayest avert Thine Eyes
Or call down Thy Wrath upon such a Poseur as myself
But if it would not take Thy valuable time away from Instructing us
On the proper method of Asking Permission to Publish on the Web
I Beseech Thee, cast Thy Gaze upon my photographs
And render a Judgement on their relative Worth
In Thy name I humbly implore you

I remember one time I ran out of Photo flo and used dishwasher liquid, with
no ill effects. Used it ever since.
But then I also mixed my own BW developers for different effects, based upon
formulas in my Chemical Rubber Handbook.

  19. Is that the apparently canonical tome that I see referred to by its color
amongst the chemically in crowd? The Yellow Book, or some such identifier?

Who do you or the poster know they are good or not until people have
    looked at them,?
People are also wasting bandwidth talking a load of pretentious cobblers

    Please don't do it again.
    Or Tracey Emin.... :)
