Anyone bought stuff from Hong Kong?

There is a guy from HK selling gear really cheap on our local auction site
www.bidorbuy.co.za and he seems to have good feedback. I was just
wondering how he makes a profit? Is HK cheaper than B&H?

  3. I have no experience with that guy. I had a few with some HK located
resellers on eBay. I also checked their feedback in advance of my orders and
there was no reason for complains.

Some parts from these selers are really cheaper than in germany stores
(Nikon lens and accessoiries). In germany we have to add some custom and tax
values after shipping to germany. So each time we have to calculate if this
    deal is a "big deal":)

I've dealt with a fellow called Hugo So. His method of cheaper (for
Australia anyway) is to sell you stuff and make it look like a present. He
hasn't done it to me but I believe he sometimes puts birthday cards in with
the goods. This (illegally) side steps Australia's Goods and services tax of
10%. The goods then are artificially cheaper.

His quote to me for a 300 mm f2.8 lens earlier in the year was only cheaper
if I was willing to scam the tax. I decided there was no value in that deal
but other Canon stuff is genuinely cheaper. I know Australian importers have
aligned their prices to an International level this year... All except
    Nikon.

If you buy something in HK and it has a problem, you'll only get warranty at
the local service agent if they have previously agreed to honour
International warranties. No grey market Nikon's get repaired in Australia.
That adds and extra 6 days to the warranty time. Not for me but you might
see some value in HK prices.

Well, the photography gear gods are certainly smiling on us here in SA.
With our currency's incredible surge against the US Dollar, we are picking
up new equipment at half the price we were paying a couple of years ago.

This guy in HK claims to be a shop owner and he has also managed to get a
Verification by the site owners (they guarantee transactions up to a
certain value). I think I will be giving this guy some serious attention
    in the months to come!
