Arca-Swiss B1 Ballhead stiff after being locked for 6 months

Discussion in '35mm Cameras' started by Christopher Phillips, May 29, 2004.

  1. I bought a B1 a year ago, used it for six months with good results,
then left it locked holding up about 13 pounds for six months.

The ballhead is now very stiff. With great effort, I can work it
back and forth and it will loosen up, except that it's still tough
into and out of the notch. As soon as I lock it, however, it returns
to the very stiff state it was in before it loosened up. Not very
    useful for small adjustments...

I tried cleaning it with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol, with no change.

Any ideas? How does one contact Arca-Swiss? Do they have a
presence or phone number in the U.S.? How does one get service
    on their ballheads?

    Thanks,
    Chris

  3. Try a little oil.......You can always clean it off with solvent if it
    doesn't work......

In a word: 'Don't'! To quote the instruction leaflet: "MAINTENANCE: Your
Monoball needs no maintenance and will serve you for many years. If the
Monoball is not moving as smoothly, clean the ball with a soft cloth and
alcohol. However, please make sure that sand and dust do not enter the
housing and DO NOT USE ANY LUBRICANTS, as this would impair proper
    function."

You must not have bought your B1 new? If you had you should have the
instruction flyer that comes with it? Have you tried loosening the Friction
Thumb Screw? The Friction Thumb Screw is the screw positioned on the face of
the large Multifunction Knob. What happens, sometimes, when forgetting the
proper operation of the Multifunction Knob, owners will try to force the big
knob backwards (counterclockwise) trying to free up the ball. Wrong
procedure! Try turning the Multifunction Knob clockwise and then back out
the Friction Thumb Screw counterclockwise and then re-loosen the
Multifunction Knob counterclockwise. (When Friction Thumb Screw is engaged,
the Multifunction Knob will not loosen past set friction point).

    Contact Arca Swiss at:

Shoot'em up, w/wo ballhead, Agfa, Fuji, Kodak and all the rest will love you
    for it!!
