Automatic synching?

I've had terrible problems trying to synch sound and having realised that my
only chance is to extract the sound from the video and then synchronize
them, I'm looking for some free software that does synching automatically -
I've got so many utilities now that do manual synching, but not automatic
    synching.

By automatic I mean that I don't want to have to work out the offsets myself
(takes ages and is never quite right) - surely the length of the sound and
the length of the video should be the same and thus, I shouldn't have to do
this bit manually should I? Its such a grey techy area that I don't know
what the best way of doing it is...

AFAIK there's nothing that can synch automatically - i.e. without some
How can this be when the sound and the video length are supposed to be the
same length. I don't get it.
Thanks- you've suggested that one before, so I've already tried that one
and have added it to my (growing) list of useful, but not quite helpful
enough utilities. Thanks anyway : (
