    Just about any digital video editing app will do that.
    These range from the one that comes with Windows (Windows Movie maker;
    and, of course, the like app that comes with a Mac) to the really
    expensive Adobe Premiere.
    A Google search on "video editor" (sans quotes) will get over 130
    million hits. Good luck!

    .avi is just a sort of container for a movie, and by default, the video is
    uncompressed, and thus huge. The video editing program of your choice
    should give you the ability to choose the codec with which you want to
    compress your video - MPG, Quicktime, DIVX, XVID, etc..

    Have a look at www.dvdrhelp.com for all the info you will ever need about
    encoding video.

    Enjoy.

    There are dozens of 'codecs' for AVI format, some of which will compress
    more, others less. You could also convert them to QuickTime, which has
    very good (MP4) compression available.
