Does anyone have a secret formula for reasonable B&W prints from a minilab?

My best success so far has been a request for the 'high contrast setting' of
operators who show an interest. This can be a little overpowering on
higher-contrast subjects, but does at least give black and white rather than
dark grey and light grey. I have no problems with colour casts. I still find
the prints only suitable as proofs and produce 'better' prints from my
    subsequent neg scans.

This seems rather odd, as I can get fantastic colour machine prints from the
same labs, and rarely request adjustments on reprints.
