Background music, pros and cons?

This whole thread and the earlier sub-titles vs. narration thread poses
questions that are at the heart of the creative process of film/video
making. There are no answers that always apply. Decisions such as these as
well as dozens of other 'should I-shouldn't I' questions are what sets
critically acclaimed directors apart from people learning the craft. Given
a body of video footage two skilled directors might make exactly opposite
decisions about titles/narration or music/no music and each arrive at very
different but equally pleasing videos. At some point new directors just
have to try many approaches. The techniques they use in one video may not
apply in the next. To be a well rounded artist one needs a lot of arrows in
the quiver. Try a titles approach with 2 minutes of video. Then try a
narration approach with the same footage. Then add music to the same
footage. Then add a different music style to the same footage (for both the
titled and narrated versions). Decide what you think is most effective.
Play the results for friends whose opinions you value. That whole process
shouldn't take more than a day of editing. You'll learn more by a lot than
you have in the time you've spent trying to corner contributors to this
newsgroup into telling you what to do.

I finally discovered it. I have Flash blocked for security reasons so I have
    to enabled Flash animations individually.

Anyway, most of the music seemed fine, except for that "Changes" song played
at a few points, which was terrible. It made my teeth chatter, and it
emphasized the budget limitations of the production.

The trailer seems long enough to qualify as a short subject in itself.

It looks like the movie could be interesting, but nobody is going to bankroll
a movie about menopause in the U.S. Also the script kind of overlooks the
fact that hormone replacement therapy will stop all the hot flashes and other
symptoms, but I guess that would make the movie really short.

  3. I didn't go far enough to notice either the bad music (but my mileage
might vary!) or that the subject was menopause.

Given the subject, I think it's very appropriate that it requires Flash
    :)

so that screen with the play arrow in the middle of it and the progress and
control bar at the bottom escapes you.

    Fascinating.

Thanks. It'll put that in with the three top honors we've won in film
    festivals last year.

How do you win honors for a film that hasn't yet been completed?

You enter it in indie short film or trailer categories.

    Frank,

Humor gets twisted on line. :)

Thanks. As for the original question, most of the music was from Apple
Soundtrack Pro's free library. Some was made from free loops I made into
music, some were finished pieces. A few were made by a 3rd party composer
    friend.

The trailer seemed well made. I'm not sure how you were able to make such a
comprehensive trailer for a film that presumably isn't finished yet, but it
looks good. And it's all the more impressive if it won honors despite that
    song.

Everyone makes their trailers first now. It's how you get money to do the
    actual project.

Ask scammers like Bernard Madoff. They seem to have an unlimited supply.

All you have to do is to reply to one of the many emails that you get
saying that you can get $10 million for helping them get the money that
rightly belonged to them before they were forced to leave the country :)

The writer of the full script hired me to excerpt from the script a short
previsualization we could shoot. I read the 120 page script, pulled the
scenes and wrote the interstitial copy. I went back to her with that and she
    funded the project.

There's a pitch package that goes out with the DVD that explains that we're
looking for funds to shoot the whole thing, or sell the script and have
    someone else start from scratch.
