I was wondering whether off the shelf Alkaline batteries could be used with
the grip. The manual says to use rechargable, but off the shelf AA would be
great in a tight spot. Years ago I remember rechargeble AA batteries were
1.2 volts as opposed to non-rechargable at 1.5 volts. Is this the reason I
shouldn't use them, or is there something else that would be detrimental to
    the camera?

I have this vertical grip and I think you are right in that alkalines are
1.2 vs 1.5 volts. You might do damage to the camera if you use anything else
other than what is recommended. I would just have enough batteries handy
rather than push your luck. You can get plenty of NP-400 batteries for $20
on Ebay. I did and they are fine. Lasts as long as the KM original battery.

Thanks Jasen, I see there are various price NP-400 equivalent batteries on
eBay. I shall follow your advice and purchase some at about the $20 mark.
