Folks, this is positively the LAST query on this annoying, but less
    than earthshaking problem.

(The replacement Chinese knockoff arrived and works fine. Hope it

Question: Do I need to remove it completely if not using for a while
(what is a "while"??), or can I leave it in and just pop loose so it
    isn't making contact.

Is it a "knockoff" (labeled "Canon" but made by someone else)?

Or a 3rd party maker (for your camera and clearly labeled as made by
    someone else.
One of my cameras goes months w/o paying attention to the battery
(Li-ion). I just re-charge it day before need and go.

I'm not claiming that is a "good" practice

    ***No, not labeled Canon.
***I did that for years, in my ignorance. Just want to know what best
practice is. I don't want to go through this return hassle again.
(BTW, I am not a shill for Amazon, but they just handled two returns
for me, way over due date, promptly and professionally.)

Then it's not a "knockoff" (as you said above).

It is a "3rd party" replacement.
Then, as long as you researched that particular brand and they are OK it
    should not be a problem.
