Betacam UVW1800 help needed!

I have been asked to copy some videos to the BetacamSP format. The
problem is, I have never worked with BetacamSP decks before. When I
connect the UVW-1800 deck to my svideo source (Panasonic AG-1980 VCR
or a laptop with svideo output) the BetacamSP deck display complains
"NO REF!" which I assume means there's no reference or genlock signal?
I thought a reference signal was optional?

When I have an input signal connected to the deck, the output display
remains solid black until I press REC, then I get a distorted picture
until I press STOP. If I rewind and playback, I still get solid black.

This deck was working perfectly a few days ago but I can't seem to get
it to work here. Is there some menu setting I am using incorrectly?

    Thanks in advance

An 1800 needs a signal to lock to.
I think you can just use the composite video from your source as
your reference signal. It may complain about it being "non-standard sync",
but I believe that it still manages to work.

If you are using the composite as your source then you will need to
loop the video in and the reference together. Make sure you only terminate
    it once.

Makes sense. What do I do if I want to use svideo as my source? Do I
need to break the Y/C into two BNC and reference with one of those?

The easiest thing would be to keep the svideo as your source but use a
composite out of the 1980 and plug that into your Sync/Black Burst input.

This is likely a correct answer.

Agreed. They will also have the same pulse. It's prefered you have a
black burst generator for reference because if your master tape has a
sync problem it'll cause havoc with the 1800 for more frames than necessary.

This is one of the reasons why the UVW series were less expensive.

    Similar Problem

Hi. I have a very similar problem, however, in my instance I'm using an ADS Pyro to output the signal from my computer. I'm capturing via component from another deck, editing in Premiere Elements, and then trying to send the signal out of the Pyro via s-video. I've got a composite out from the Pyro going into the reference input of the Betacam, but I'm getting garbled output on the monitor. Any ideas?
