Camcorder to do Analogue to Digital converting

Discussion in 'Video Cameras' started by Martin S Taylor, Apr 7, 2004.

  1. Hi:

Is there a digital camcorder which can be used as an analogue-digital
converter in real time? I know that most can take an analogue input, record
it on MiniDV, then play it to my computer down the firewire line.

But I've heard there are camcorders which can cut out the middleman and will
allow me to input the analogue at the same time as I'm capturing the digital
    on the computer.

Anyone confirm this, and tell me which makes and models will do this?

(I know there are specific boxes which will do this, like the Formac DV, but
it would be nice to have a camcorder too!)

Yes. Most Sony miniDV that include DV-in. Some other makes/models are
also reported to support analogue pass-through but you'd have to get
    confirmation of the particular models.
I can personally attest that the TRV33, TRV60 and TRV80 provide this
facility. My somewhat older TRV30 does this too (I frequently do this
with sources from VHS and Sky Digibox. A friend has done it from his
Freeview Box. You just have to set the menu to AV ---> DV.

Just to add to Tony's (as ever) sound advice, my Canon MVX150i has the
    analogue to digital conversion facility.

I should have added, you need to remove the tape - otherwise the
camcorder switches off after a little time.

I should perhaps add that the TRV33 is in the process of being replaced
by the HC20, HC30, HC40 series. Only the HC30 and HC40 support analogue
    pass-through - NOT the HC20.

I dont think my TRV19 (or lower numbered Sony's) will do this, the manual
says that only the 22 and 33 will do it (the manual covers 12-33) and I cant
see an option on the menus. Pity, this is one thing that I would quite liked
to have done and might have swayed me towards the 22, I thought the only
diff was the memory stick and colour viewfinder.

  7. Thanks for that - it was enormously helpful and I shall probably get a Sony
    HC30 or HC30E (presumably there's little difference).

Do you happen to know if it will do pass-through in both directions: analogue
to FireWire and FireWire to analogue?

My Panasonic NV-GS55 (American model: PV-GS55) does.
