Camera can't see photo files on SD card

  1. Neighbour had uploaded pics from Canon SD card to PC, then made
the mistake of erasing many files on SD card instead of on PC's
    copy.

They need the pics on the card so that they can use the card on
their photo printer, but didn't know how to get them back from
    the PC onto the card.

Did that for them, so camera card now has all the original pics.
BUT, the camera doesn't see the pics downloaded onto the card
from PC - only the few pics that had been left on the card.

The PC can see all the pics on the card, as can the photo
    printer.

Anyone know how to make the camera see all the pics?
(I believe Canon has some hidden directory on the card that
    controls which pics it sees.)

Is there a way to make the camera see all the pics that are on
    the card?

Alternatively, as they now have all they need from this set of
photo's, how can they normalise the SD card for the next round of
    photography (ie.. abandoning curent pics)?

Can one tell the camera to re-format the card?
(Is that what it does with a new card?)

Sorry, did not make note of which model of Canon it is.

  2. But the photo printer could see them perfectly...

  3. I don't remember what folders the neighbour's camera had, but on
my Pentax Optio 550 the top-level folder is DCIM, which contains
*only* the subdirectory 100PENTX, which contains the picture
    files.
