Irrelevant to the point, which was that the TC14 does not seriously
degrade an image when used with the new 80-400.

Do you mean "Basic panel" adjustments or actual color adjustments?
You know you can over cook those "Clarity", "Contrast" and "Shadow" sliders?
Just how much sharpening in ACR are you talking about?
Define 2 does a pretty good job at noise removal, but it won't fix over
sharpening artifacts and haloes, no matter where that sharpening is
There is something missing in you workflow that you are not telling us,
as there is something seriously wrong with that image. It is not what I
would choose as an example to illustrate image quality.
If I can do this sort of thing with a D300S and a 70-300mm, what are
you doing wrong with your D800+ 80-400mm+TC?

Hmmm..... I question the actual quality of your original, and what you
might have done in post. Something is wrong. I would expect better of
    $3500-$4000 worth of camera kit.

    Just what are you smoking?
I don't know how you come to that conclusion from that great capture,
    but truly awful quality image.
