....what is required for it, more specifically, the battery charger to work

Is it a matter of replacing the lead or buying an US -> AU adapter plug.

Or is the charger voltage specific?

    Has anyone tried this?

Probably voltage specific but may not be. Buy an adapter from somewhere
    like Dick Smith Electronics.

The input for the Canon BP-511 charger is 100V--240V AC50/60Hz,
so as far as I'm aware you'll only need an adaptor plug.

I bought mine in the US.

The charger will take from 100-240 volts and has a separate figure eight
lead with an American plug on it. If you don't have one lying around this
    should cost <$10.

its dual 110/220v. all you'll need is a figure8 power cable/lead that you can
buy from jb's for ~$4. you could get an adapter instead, but i think a new
lead would be the better option.
