Best i've seen so far is $628 on dirtcheapcameras.com.au

Import from US can be had for around $500 if i don't get hit with GST +
    customs.

The price parity between the US and Australia is improving on newly released
products, but stuff that has been around for a while can still be way
    overpriced.

    I just priced a 33V from B&H Photo, and it came to $299.95 USD + $34.25
snail mail shipping = $486.33 AUD (at current time of conversion on
    www.xe.com).

There is nothing wrong with going for this. If you make sure you POST it,
and don't get it sent via FedEx etc you will get it into Australia GST and
DUTY free. B&H Photo are the only online USA site I have seen so far that
offer postal international service. All the rest of them will only ship
FedEx or equivalent. The big difference here is that ...

    1. POSTAL = $1000 AUD before they will charge duties/taxes
    2. FEDEX etc = $250 AUD before they will charge duties/taxes

Make sure you remember this if you decide to order from o/s. Since there is
no chargers and stuff like that to worry about (power problems) there's no
hassle. If you get the USA model I think it comes with a USA international
    warranty as well.

Sounds worth it to me ... except I picked up a EOS30 brand new for $450 :)

I must be lucky. I just had two parcels, sent the same day, arrived the same
day. Both Fedex. Both declared properly as being $400A in value. Passed
straight through. No GST, no Fees. Nothing.

Indeed you are lucky! Was it FedEx international priority or FedEx slow mail
though? Anyhoo, sounds like you got a good deal, I wouldn't be complaining.
I've been hit a few times with FedEx, they seem to hate me for some reason,
    so I hate them back!

I've been watching xe.com, watching the dollar slowly drop :(. Should have
bought all this stuff back at 80c/USD.

Even though the gear probably doesn't come with a warranty that canon oz
will honour, you only have to buy a few items overseas and the savings is
suddenly enough to actually replace one of the items should it fail. At
$100 - $200 savings per item, it soon adds up.

I think i'll go with B&H again .. just waiting for the dollar to improve a
    little.
been caught before, so i'm all too well aware.

I must be lucky. I just had two parcels, sent the same day, arrived the
Fedex International Priority. I got the parcels five days after shipping
from Atlanta and tracked them all the way via the net. I bought the units
from www.keh.com so no monkey business. They won't even sell me a (new)
Canon lens coz their agreement with Canon says no export. How straight is
    THAT!!

Whom are you dealing with? I think Customs hit the Hong Kong and Singapore
stuff and leave the US stuff alone. Yippee for me :)

I have had lots of stuff come in from the USA as well. All USPS. All
declared porperly and NEVER been hit. I guess my turn is soon ;)
